Further to the Company's Proforma Full Year Financial Statement and Dividend Announcement on 28 March 2000, the Directors append below the revised review of the performance of the Company and its principal subsidiaries:- The Group's turnover for the year was $321.1 million, an increase of $173.6 million or 117.7% as compared to 1998. This was mainly attributable to (i) higher turnover recognised for the Kim Yam Heights and the Laguna 88 residential projects; (ii) higher turnover from hotel operations as a result of higher room and occupancy rates achieved by the Group's hotels; and (iii) increased turnover from food and beverage operations as more outlets were opened during the year. Group operating profit before tax, minority interests and extraordinary items improved from the previous year's loss of $67.8 million to a profit of $37.8 million. This was mainly due to (i) a $27.1 million write-back of part of the provisions for anticipated losses on development projects. In 1998, a provision of $65.7 million in anticipated losses in the value of two residential projects was charged to the accounts; (ii) improved performance by the Group's hotels which was mainly attributable to an increase in turnover of $14.9 million or 63.8% from 1998; and (iii) improvement in performance of the food and beverage and trading operations as a result of higher turnover of $9.3 million as well as a reduction in provision for stock obsolescence as compared to 1998. The Group's operating profit after tax attributable to members of the Company was $34.9 million, representing an earnings per share of 14.3 cents. The Group's net tangible asset backing per share increased from $1.17 in 1998 to $1.34. At the Company level, the extraordinary items of $18.5 million represented a partial write-back of provisions made for amounts owing by some subsidiaries and the gain arising from the sale of one subsidiary to another as part of the Group's restructuring exercise. These were reversed at Group level. The extraordinary items of the Group represented the loss on dilution of the Company's shareholding in one of its subsidiaries which was partially offset by the profit on disposal of long-term quoted equities. In the opinion of the Directors, no item, transaction or event of a material and unusual nature has arisen in the interval between the end of the financial year and the date of this report which would substantially affect the results of the Group and of the Company. Bonvests Holding has beaten 11 bidders including Listed property group Wing Tai and Ho Bee for the Jalan Kembangan site for $75.3m, which is 18 pct lower than the bid by Eltech & Electronics some two years ago. It gives an estimated land cost of $319 psf; and is estimated to break even at $600 psf. Given that the Asteria park in the vicinity sold at $700 - $800 psf, the development – 173 units is very attractive. it is far better than selling 400 to 500 units as the site is small and there is likely an advantange of capital investment efficiency.

Bonvests investment in food & beverage is returned with good profit. The outlets of Starburg Coffee, Burger King and newly acquired and set up Orange Julius have been increasing in numbers and growing in strength. The recent success in bid for Kembagan MRT site provides a relief for Bonvests and permit the development of property to be carried out which is the specialty of Bonvests.

It's Sanani Season

by Nicole Roberts, coffee master

It's Sanani Season

Arabian Mocha Sanani is one of my very favorite coffees, and I’m super-excited that it’s Sanani season at Starbucks. This coffee is now available at the peak of its flavor, just like an apple during apple season.

This is the coffee that helped me discover the beverage I was drinking every morning could be more than warm, caffeinated liquid. Before working here, I knew nothing about coffee tastings – comparing one coffee to another to identify the acidity, body and flavor.

This was a completely new concept and a little intimidating. At first, it seemed that coffee just tasted like … coffee. But slowly I began to recognize a few differences.

Then I tasted Sanani and everything changed.

Panama La Florentina joins our Clover lineup

by Leslie Wofford, green coffee quality specialist

Panama La Florentina joins our Clover lineup

A returning favorite joins our Clover® brewing system menu this May: Panama La Florentina. This coffee has been a Starbucks exclusive since we first offered it in 1994.

Panama La Florentina is a medium-bodied cup with crisp, clean, sweet orange blossom notes. It grows at 1400 meters in the region of Volcán, Chiriquí – near the Barú Volcano – in northwestern Panama. Much of the farm is shaded and consists of older root stock varietal coffee trees such as typica and bourbon.

I also highly recommend trying this coffee iced. Its crisp acidity combines with flavors of cola nut resulting in a rich, full flavor and lingering sweetness – you will swear someone added sugar to your coffee!

(P.S. With Earth Day having just come and gone, it’s also worth nothing that this is a Starbucks™ Shared Planet™ coffee.)

A Wonderful "Starter" Coffee

by Chris Gimbl, product manager

A Wonderful "Starter" Coffee

Occasionally I run into someone who has never tried our coffee. And sometimes I chat with someone who has tried our coffee but hasn’t become a fan. They find our coffees too intense, too roasty, or too…something.

In these situations, I usually try to understand how the person is brewing coffee and what they are tasting that they don’t like. Maybe the grind is off, or maybe they are not using the proper proportion of coffee to water. After doing this troubleshooting, I usually make a coffee recommendation for them to try: Brazil Ipanema Bourbon.

Our New Seasonal Coffees
by Heidi Durham, packaged coffee manager
Last Sunday, as I was on my morning trail run, the awareness that spring was emerging in the forest put an extra bounce in my stride. I smiled as I noticed the osoberry buds making their way into fresh, new, bright green leaves. I love this time of year in Seattle, when winter’s rainy grayness transforms into a sea of green, changing with each passing day.

Those osoberry buds reminded me of our new Seasonal Coffees—both are surprising, fresh and have the ability to make you smile. These remarkable coffees are available to you (and me) at their very peak of flavor. Think of that short window of time every year when your favorite fruit is in season. Getting to enjoy a Seasonal Coffee is like that.
